How do I qualify for the Masters Online Qualifier?

The CrossFit Games Masters Division is open to athletes who are 35 years old or older. Athletes will be sorted into the proper age division during registration (35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+). Those who are uncertain whether they're old enough to compete, or are curious which age group they'll be sorted into, can find the birthday cutoffs in the  Rulebook

The Masters Division has a three-stage season: Open, Masters Online Qualifier, Games.

To qualify for the Masters Online Qualifier:

Step 1: Register for the Open

Open registration starts on January 11 at and continues through February.

Step 2: Compete in the Open

The Open starts on Thursday, February 22, at 5:00 p.m PT, and continues through Monday, March 26, at 5:00 p.m. PT. One workout is released each Thursday at 5 p.m. PT, and you have until the following Monday at 5 p.m. PT to complete the workout and submit your score.

You can perform the workout at a participating CrossFit affiliate in front of a registered judge, or film your performance and submit a link to the video with your score each week for online review.

Complete the workout variation specified for your age division. Whenever possible, opt for the Rx'd version of the week's workout since 1 rep as Rx'd is ranked higher than the best Scaled performance.

Step 3: Finish the Open in the top 200 worldwide in your age division.

While the Individuals and Teams compete in their region, the Masters compete with others around the globe.

Your worldwide standings, within your age division, are what matter. Finish the Open in the top 200 worldwide in your age division, and you will get an automatic invite to the Masters Online Qualifier. Please note that the leaderboard continues to fluctuate after the close of score submissions for the final Open workout, so athletes on the bubble will need to check in again later.

Step 4: Compete in the Masters Online Qualifier

No invitations will be sent to the Masters Online Qualifier. If you finished the Open in qualifying position, you will be allowed to enter scores on the Masters Online Qualifier workouts (now called "events").

The Masters Online Qualifier is very similar to the Open, except now the field has been narrowed and the events are not designed to be accessible to people with varied fitness levels. The programming is designed to test whether you have what it takes to be able to handle the loading and more technical movements at the CrossFit Games.

The Masters Online Qualifier events are posted on on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT, and you have until the following Monday at 5 p.m. PT to complete all of the events and submit your scores online. You can perform the events at a participating CrossFit affiliate in front of a registered judge, or you can film all of your workout performances and submit a link to the performance on YouTube with your score. Please note that multiple events are released on Thursday (historically four), not just one. You can complete the events in any order, and if desired you can repeat an event to try to get a better score. Those who have a shot at qualifying for the CrossFit Games should film all of their performances since Games qualifiers will be subject to video review.

The top 20 overall at the end of the Masters Online Qualifier are invited to the CrossFit Games.

Information regarding the Age-group Online Qualifier can be found in the  Rulebook sections 3.01 - 3.06.

Age-Group athletes will compete in the Open against all other Age-Group athletes in their age division worldwide for the opportunity to advance to the next level of competition. Following the Open, the top 200 Age-Group athletes worldwide in each age division will be invited to compete in the Age-Group Online Qualifier. In this competition, Age-Group athletes will submit scores and/or videos for four additional workouts.

The Online Qualifier workouts will be released on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Age-Group athletes will have until Monday, April 23, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. PT, to submit their scores and/or videos for these workouts.

Age-Group athletes submitting scores must use a registered judge for each workout and have their performance validated by a validly licensed CrossFit affiliate in good standing. In addition, all four workouts must be videotaped. Age-Group athletes will be asked to submit one to four of these videos for review. Alternatively, Age-Group athletes may elect to submit videos of the four workouts online for judging and validation. All videos submitted for review must adhere to the video submission guidelines provided.

Age-Group athletes will have five scores tabulated in order to determine their final rank in the Online Qualifier: four scores from the Online Qualifier workouts and one score based on their final overall rank in the Open. If an athlete fails to post a valid score in an Online Qualifier workout for any reason, they will receive a score of “0” for that workout.

Ties on the overall Online Qualifier Leaderboard will be broken by awarding the best position to the athlete who has the highest result in any single Online Qualifier workout. This includes the score based on the athlete’s final Open rank. If athletes remain tied after this first tiebreaker, the process continues to their next highest single result, and so forth. Results from individual Open workouts will NOT be used to break ties on the overall Online Qualifier Leaderboard. Ties will not be broken for single event results. More than one athlete can share an event result and each will earn the original point value.

On April 26, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. PT, CrossFit will request one or more videos of the Online Qualifier workouts from the top 40 male and female athletes in each age division. The submitted video(s) will be reviewed and the score(s) for the requested workout(s) either validated, modified or invalidated. Athletes may receive an invitation to the Games if their score is validated or modified. If an athlete’s score is modified, the athlete’s overall rank in the Online Qualifier will be recalculated with this new score. If the athlete remains ranked high enough following this recalculation, they may receive an invitation to the Games. The video(s) must demonstrate the athlete has the work capacity required to achieve their original posted Online Qualifier score.

Athletes who fail to provide the requested video(s) will have their scores for the workout(s) invalidated (changed to a score of “0”). The video review process for these videos will be completed by May 8, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. PT

Only after the video review process is complete will the Age-Group Leaderboard be set. The top 20 male and female Age-Group athletes in each age division (including Teenage divisions) will be invited to compete at the Games starting on May 10, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. PT. If Age-Group athletes ranked in the top 20 in any age division decline their invitation to the Games, the next highest-ranked athlete in that division may be invited. The Games invitation process for Age-Group athletes will be completed by June 9, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. PT.
